People who leave their home country due to persecution and ask for protection in another country are called asylum seekers. In Canada, asylum seekers are called refugee claimants.
On arrival in Canada, refugee claimants begin a complex journey in their quest for refugee protection. If they get refugee protection, they are eligible to apply for permanent residence. Refugee claimants are not Government Assisted Refugees or Privately Sponsored Refugees, who receive permanent residence on arrival in Canada.
These resources are created and delivered by frontline workers, legal experts, and people with refugee claimant experience to make refugee protection more accessible for refugee claimants.
If you are a refugee claimant in Canada, MyRefugeeClaim.ca resources are for you, to help you get informed, connected, and prepared. My Refugee Claim does not replace good legal advice.
If you are a settlement/community worker, lawyer, or concerned Canadian, use MyRefugeeClaim.ca and the Orientation Booklet with refugee claimants as you accompany them on their journey.
