Oath of Citizenship bill tabled in Parliament

On February 18, 2020, the Honourable Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, introduced a bill to amend the Citizenship Act to change Canada’s Oath of Citizenship. Read the official news release from IRCC’s website here.

The bill responds to calls of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) by recognizing rights of First Nations, Inuit, and MĂ©tis Peoples. Learn more about TRC, and “Beyond 94” – a tool to monitor changes and progress of the calls here.

Call #94: Replace the Oath of Citizenship 

We call upon the Government of Canada to replace the Oath of Citizenship with the following:

I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada including Treaties with Indigenous Peoples, and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen.
