English Online is a not-for-profit organization that provides free, flexible and accessible online services to help newcomers to Manitoba succeed and reach their full potential. Our goal is to address newcomers’ unique needs for settlement and integration through a comprehensive online environment.
We have been pioneering innovative service delivery since 2008. In March, 2015, we launched our Live and Learn program Livelearn.ca, a centralized access point for settlement and language learning options. This expanded our operations beyond English language instruction to include settlement and workplace integration support.
As a self- directed program, we offer many learning options so our learners can pick and choose the ones that meet their settlement and language needs. Our e-Facilitators provide ongoing support and feedback to ensure constant interaction to help newcomers meet their learning goals.
Our programs:
Live
We feature articles on 12 settlement themes, language quizzes and dialogue samples geared for CLB 5 and up, with translations for CLB 3-4. All materials are open resource, available 24/7 on livelearn.ca. No registration needed.
Learn
Group Study – this option allows learners to work with peers and an e-facilitator to support settlement needs and language practice. We offer Multi-Week Sessions, Drop-in workshops, Virtual Coffee Chats and Conversation Circles where learners can discuss life in Canada, explore articles and videos, improve their speaking and writing skills and continue discussions in forums.
Self-Study – we encourage self-directed learning through open resource materials on the site. Learners can access English Exercises for beginners, lower intermediate and intermediate levels; Canadian Idioms used in the workplace and in daily conversations; and iEnglish resources and videos to help develop effective self-directed learning strategies.
One-on-one Learning
- LINC Homestudy Program– Training program for ESL learners who cannot attend a face-to-face class in Manitoba. They are matched with an e-Facilitator who monitors and assesses their progress. Upon completion, learners receive a LINC certificate.
- E-Volunteer Program –Learners are matched with an EAL e-Tutor, a Career e-Mentor or Settlement e-Volunteer depending on their needs. Volunteers are established Manitobans who meet with learners online (Skype) to teach English, share tips, resources and other valuable information.
Peer to peer Learning
Registered learners participate in various discussion forums on the site. They are encouraged to share, comment, and react to posts and practice their language skills.
Volunteer Program
We run an active, dynamic and flexible volunteer program for professionals who wish to be Career e-Mentors, EAL/ESL Tutors, or Settlement e-Volunteers. Volunteers can expand their digital fluency, gain new experience and boost career options while sharing their expertise and giving back to the community. Learn more about our volunteer streams here: Volunteer with English Online.
LearnIT2Teach
The LearnIT2teach project, funded by IRCC, provides LINC teachers with the technology tools to implement blended learning in their programs, as well as a FREE four stage teacher training and professional development program to master the tools. English Online delivers a face-to-face Stage One training to language and settlement practitioners in Manitoba and provides online mentoring for the subsequent stages of training.
